“The Allure of the Automobile”

There is nothing like a rare classic automobile displayed in pristine condition.  In this is photo is an extremely rare Ferrari 250 Berlinetta.  This car along with others from the likes of Aston Martin, Mercedes, Jaguar, GM, Dodge, Bugatti, and others were on display at the High Museum of Art in Atlanta Georgia.  I was lucky enough to view this rare and stunning collection this past weekend.  Cars such as these although stored in very favorable conditions still need to be detailed.  The challenges detailing a classic car are numerous.  Extreme care must be taken to ensure that damage does not occur to any surface or part on a car such as this.  Many times it is impossible to find a replacement part if damaged by incorrect products or techniques.  In addition, these cars often contain parts that are much more fragile than what you would find on a modern automobile.  Detailing a classic show car is also a much more intensive process.  Although they are usually clean, an extremely thorough and methodical process must be used to ensure every surface is gently cleaned and protected.  One missed area can ruin the appearance of an otherwise flawless automobile.  If you are lucky enough to own a rare or classic automobile be sure that you are educated on the proper way to care for its appearance.  If unsure, consult a qualified professional detail company to assist you with the task.  If you are in the Atlanta area, I highly recommend you go and see this unbelievable showing of fine automobiles.

Butter Soft Leather

Those of you who have leather upholstery in their car, know how soft and beautiful the leather was when the car was new.  With improper care, however, this beautiful material can quickly look tired and worn.  Modern automotive leather is actually coated with a vinyl based dye.  This coating not only gives the leather its color, but is a protective layer for the leather itself.  This coating can be quickly degraded if it is not cared for properly.  Dirt and body oils are acidic and quickly start to break down the vinyl coating.  You may notice this as small lines or cracks on the surface of the leather.  In addition, UV rays from the sun fade the dye, and further degrade the coating.  Cleaning your car’s leather upholstery often, is the single most important thing you can do to preserve it.  Regular cleaning removes the harmful dirt before it has a chance to break done the leather’s coating.   Protecting your car’s leather with a water based UV protector should be done a few times a year to prevent soiling and protect against UV damage.  Oily conditioners can actually do more harm than good, because they are intended for non-coated leather, and can attract soils quickly.  Remember, if you want your car’s leather to look good indefinitely, clean it often with a mild detergent and protect with a quality UV protector several times a year.

Pay for the rest

I had an economics professor in college who liked to recite the phrase “Do what you do best, and pay for the rest”.  In economics the phrase makes perfect sense.  You work to make money, and then you exchange that money for goods, services and other scarce things.  Auto detailing is no different.  Yes, a motivated person can buy some basic supplies and detail their own car and achieve decent results.  Detailing your own car takes time though; a lot of it.  In economics ‘time’ is a valuable good because it is scarce.  In most cases a person will spend at least 3 hours attempting to detail their own car.  That is 3 hours you could have spent doing something you enjoy, or being productive at work.  Not to mention the physical demands required to properly detail a car.   A mobile detail company will come to you and detail your car faster and better than you could.  A service such as this, is very convenient and frees up more of your time to do what you do best.

All In the Details

Detailing a car is a fairly straightforward set of processes.  Actually, many progressive steps, that ultimately result in a very clean, polished, and protected car.  The exact process is very important, and determines the quality of the results.   It takes some intelligence, and requires a great deal of focus, and attention to detail. Without a good process, the results can be bad, or can result in damage to an automobile. The best process is not much good when a person is unfocused and not paying attention to the details. The notion that anyone, with some basic materials can properly detail a car is false.  A superior process combined with a motivated individual using the best equipment and products is what results in a truly detailed car.
